Only 1 day left. I'm so sad to be almost done. I love taking pictures of these babies every day.

Today Miss Lylah wasn't feeling well. Her top teeth are coming in, her nose is runny, her eye is watering and she hasn't slept in two days. Thank goodness for Tylenol and Baby Orajel. All in all, everyone around here has been grumpy today. When the sun came out for a few minutes we decided to head outside. Both girls were happy and I enjoyed the peace and quiet for a minute.

I have been looking forward to this day for a while. Today was the last day of my internship for school and after one more huge homework assignment and class tonight I am done! I'm on the home stretch to being a college graduate and I can't even tell you how great that feels!

I really appreciate all of my awesome clients who have been oh-so patient with me this month. Starting tomorrow I'll get back to editing your pictures full force!

(blog followers can get excited to see 2 weddings, 2 family sessions, a bridal session, newborn session and a one year old session in the very near future!)

Today I asked Lylah if she wanted to do Pat-a-Cake and she just started clapping away! It was so cute! After that, every time Lucy started singing the song Lylah would start clapping. We loved it!

This was one of my favorite sessions to date. First we stopped at this cute little farm and got some amazing shots. Then we went down to the lake and got some amazing sunset pictures. Just when I thought we were done, we noticed some guys riding their bikes on the lake! It was frozen solid. Couldn't pass up that photo op! Doesn't it look like they're standing on water? So cool!

Why does it take so long?

I've recently had a few brides wonder why it takes so long to get their C.D.s back after the wedding day (my standard turn around time, which I tell all my brides, is 4-6 weeks).

Let me explain.

You may have heard (or maybe you haven't) that only a little bit of a photographer's work is actually spent with you, taking the pictures. Here is what happens after I get home from a shoot.

I take all of my images in a format that a computer wont open without special software. This format is called RAW and I use it because it saves more of the data from an image than a standard .jpg image does. It therefore allows me more flexibility in editing. Something a lot of people don't know is that a normal .jpg image is automatically edited and compressed in the camera, as soon as it's taken. A RAW image is not. RAW images are larger because they do save more data. Larger images = more time to edit and more strain on a computer.

Once I get all the RAW images onto my computer then I have to go through them. I delete any images that are blurry, have someone blinking or making a face, duplicates, etc. at this point.

Next, I start the editing process. Because the images are RAW, I first open them in a RAW editing program. Here is what a image might look like straight out of the camera:

It's not bad, but not up the that standard that I like my final product to be.

In the RAW editing software I'll be able to adjust a whole bunch of settings. For this picture, I mostly brightened different aspects of the picture (dark sections, highlights, etc.). I always edit it looking at the colors of the skin. Everything else can be adjusted later, but the skin color is always my number 1 concern. I also straightened out this image. I then export the image and open it in Photoshop. Here is what it looks like after I save it out:

Once in Photoshop, I'm going to go ahead and add some dimension back into the building, background, his suit and their hair:

I will then go in manually and edit out blemishes on the skin (don't worry! I'll always leave things that are part of you- like moles and freckles. Only the zits go :). )

And the last thing I do is sharpen the eyes and other features so the image is nice and crisp:

And there you have it!

It might not sound like a lot, but to edit an image like this (which is a pretty basic edit) takes me about 8-10 minutes. I also usually will convert the image to black and white and save a copy of that, which take an additional 2-3 minutes. You can see that even at the best estimate, I can edit about 6 pictures an hour. This is not simply burning you a C.D., a whole lot more goes into your images.

Maybe you don't think it's all necessary-that the original shot looks fine. But I'm trying to build a brand. And I'm a little bit of a perfectionist with my images. Thats a good thing for you, because that means every one of your pictures from your big day is going to be absolutely beautiful. Just like the day was.

I want to make your memories as perfect as possible.

I'm sure you can see now why 4-6 weeks is a reasonable estimate. I understand that you are anxious to get your pictures back! It's the best day of your life and you're dying to relive it! But don't you want your pictures to be a great as possible?

I did this project a year ago and just loved it! You can see it here. I loved the chance to take out my camera every single day and document ordinary parts of our life. I loved how it was about taking pictures just for me. It really helped my creative juices get flowin' again.

I can't wait to refresh and rejuvenate after the last few months of craziness! This project is the perfect way to start off a new year.

I've been so excited to blog this session. It's one of my favorites to date.

This beautiful mom is the older sister of one of my best childhood friends. Since I don't have any older siblings, I've always really looked up to her. I learned a lot about boys and life from Tricia. She is an amazing mom to 3 beautiful little girls, 2 who are old than Lucy. I've followed her blog religiously ever since Lucy was born, hoping to pick up tips.

In August, this family was in a terrible car accident. Their beautiful 3 year old daughter, Adria, was taken back to live with her Heavenly Father. Tricia was seriously injured. It hit me really close to home, especially being so close to their family. Those kinds of experiences really make you slow down and remember to cherish the little moments. Tricia has been incredible about sharing many thoughts and feelings about things since the accident. I've learned so much from her and hope that if I ever experience anything like she has I can handle it with even half her grace.

As I tried to think of something I could do for this family, I kept thinking about a photo shoot. That's something unique that I can share. After offering it to them, I realized that it could have seemed really insensitive. Maybe they wouldn't want to do that so soon after sweet Adria's death. My hope was not to capture posed family pictures (which probably would have showed a gaping hole without their little girl). I hoped to simply capture the love and gratitude they felt for each other.

Tricia, I hope I succeed in that goal. I love you guys.

I was not initially supposed to shoot this wedding. But due to a family tragedy, the wedding had to be postponed a few days and this cute couple were left without a photographer. I was so glad that I was available and able to help them out!

Despite the sad experiences they had just gone through, it really was a gorgeous day. {T} was radiant and {N} couldn't have looked happier. Congrats guys! It was so fun!

I have lots of fun sessions to post about-it's busy season for photographers right now!

But I've been wanting to do this post for a while.

I specialize in wedding photography. I shoot 2-3 weddings a month and I love it! The funny thing is, I rarely do engagement sessions. Like I've done maybe 3 this whole year. I've been so puzzled by this. I do lots of bridal sessions and lots of wedding day sessions. But never engagement sessions. So I started asking wedding clients about it. Of course this isn't always the case, but the overwhelming majority of clients I asked gave me a response similar to this:

'Client' sees my images on my blog. They love them. They show them to 'Friend'-you know the one. The one who just got a nice camera and is starting a photography business. 'Friend' says no problem, I can give you pictures like that. Easy enough. They go to the engagement session. A few days (or hours) later, 'Client' gets their pictures back. And sad news. They aren't very great. They are blurry, dark, unflattering. Maybe have a little crazy photoshop editing. 'Client' is disappointed and ends up hiring me right after that to do their Bridals and Wedding sessions.

I'm not trying to toot my own horn. I'm not the best photographer in the world. Far from it. But I know what I'm doing. I don't just have a nice camera and Photoshop. I know how my camera works inside and out. I shoot it in manual and manually edit every single shot you'll receive. I understand lighting. I know posing. I've read books, taken classes, belong to forums and subscribe to magazines.

Every photographer has to start somewhere. But it shouldn't be on your wedding. You deserve better memories of the biggest day of your life.

On a related note, I am more than happy to let up-and-coming photographers 'second shoot' a wedding with me, if they want to get some experience. Call me!

My style is very natural. Clean. Classic. Those are the kinds of images that speak to me. I think 'Clients' and their 'Friends' see my work and think it's easy to mimic because they might not see obvious photoshopping. Here are some examples of SOOC (straight out of the camera) shots next to the edited, finished version.

And one of my biggest pet-peeves is when a photographer does an icky black and white conversion. It's so obvious when they just desaturate the image (see the before shot coming up). I love true whites and blacks. Not lots of muddy greys. See:

He might have had a traumatic experience with my reflector during their engagement pictures. Years ago.

Remember these guys? Love them! Their wedding day was perfect! She looked gorgeous, he looked handsome, they were both so happy! We got so many great shots, I had a hard time narrowing it down. So this is pretty much the longest blog post ever.

On a not so happy note, this groom's sister's family was in a terrible car accident last week, and their three year old daughter was killed. Mom is still in the hospital with a broken back and variety of other problems. If you would like to make a donation to their sweet family, please go here. I love your sweet family Tricia, and you're constantly in our prayers!

Anyway, back to the wedding day. :)

So, it turns out I've posted on this blog a lot more recently than I thought I had. It's been the longest week. My amazing grandfather passed away last Saturday and I haven't concentrated on anything else. We have spent a lot of time with my grandma and I made a DVD for his funeral. It was so therapeutic for me, I really felt like a spent the week with him.

Here is a picture of him just after high school. Is he handsome or what?

Anyway, if you are waiting for pictures, I'm now about a week behind and I sincerely apologize!

This blog has been so neglected the last few weeks. I have 8 sessions to get up on here. Yikes!

Here is the cute {H} family! I did their wedding pictures and newborn pictures when their baby was born (remember these). I love repeat clients!

I don't actually love family pictures though. I don't feel like I'm very good at them. I'm definitely a wedding photographer. But I thought some of these turned out okay. What do you think?

I love these two. I met this guy almost 12 years ago, and he's like a little brother to me. This gorgeous girl is one of my best friend's little sister. I'm so happy for them! They are so in love!

Can I tell you how much I love shooting newborns? They're hard, but so worth it.

I was nervous to shoot this little guy, because he was already a month old (if you're wanting to schedule a newborn shoot please try to schedule it within the first 14 days! For more tips, check out this post). But this boy was a champ! He slept most of the time and was still flexible enough to get some darling shots! I was so glad his mom ask me to document this special time for their little family!
